Tiling grout and bath sealant repairs?
got my bathroom a new suite and tiled foor to ceiling about 10mths ago. over the last 2 mths the grout around the first row of tiles at the bath inside edge has started to crack and discolor. also the sealant (not silicon, more solid, possibly some sort of grout) around the edge of the bath has discolored and come away from the bath. can anyone tell me how to repair. a tiler has told me the tiles need to be removed and a seal has to be placed under the tiles and outside them. i think he is trying to shaft me. i am handy enough around the house and have tiled a long time ago (20 yrs) but have never seen tile repairs done. but i am confident i can do this job myself if given proper instruction. any help would be greatly appreciated.
I would get a grout removal tool and remove the grout that is cracking. Then remove the sealant that is discolored. Put the new grout in and wait a day for it to cure. then seal the grout with grout sealer. Then use silicon caulking to seal where the tile meets the tub. A common misconception is that once the grout is sealed its pretty much maintenance free. It really should be resealed every year. and depending on the tile used. It may need to be sealed also.
