Why is Shakespeare considered the greatest writer of all time?
with other arts there are debates as to who was the most important creator for the art (ie. music and beethoven being the greatest composer of all time, others say mozart, some say bach, etc.). but with literature, i have never heard of another writer who was compared to shakespeare in this sense that there might be someone who was better / equally as good as him (like in the music example i gave above). has no-one come close to shakespeares achievements? is that why he is always regarded as the greatest writer of all time?
Shakespeare wrote in Iambic Pentameter, a form of poetry that is simply incredibly. (I have written one poem in Iambic Pentameter, it is my pride and joy. I will never write another one.)
He wrote plays that appealed to the masses. My sophomore English teacher said “what I would do for penny seats at the Globe.”
Although not always the original author of the stories he turned into plays, his way with dialogue is incredible. Now add incredible dialogue to Iambic Pentameter… yeah, he’s phenominal.
And course his plays have outlived him and are appreciated in different countries. Romeo and Juliet crosses cultures. Although Eastern and Western culture view the play differently, its still viewed.
Shakespeare is to writing, in a lot of ways, as DaVinci was to most everything else.
